Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King [John12:12-19]
12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”
14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
15 “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion;
see, your king is coming,
seated on a donkey’s colt.”
16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
As the world celebrates “Palm Sunday” on 20 March 2016, I look back at the chapter 12 of John to a passage that shares about Jesus coming to Jerusalem as a King.
Though it says “King” I wonder of the grand entry of Jesus. From what I understand he entered in as a simple teacher with his disciples but his smṛti (“what is remembered”, actions) and śruti (“what is heard”) were heard by the people of Jerusalem. The verse 18 says – Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. This lead the people to come with Palm leaves and welcome him as a KING. They honor him as the KING OF ISRAEL. He was given a ride on the donkey’s colt to ride and the people sang Hosanna praises. It is by his deeds that he was honored as KING. Similarly it is by our deeds that we need to honor our king. Our actions and thoughts need to share the love of Jesus.
The scriptures says the Pharisees felt that it is going no where and The whole world has gone after him . Why did they feel that the world is going after our Lord? I believe its because of his deeds, his actions, his behavior in midst of adverse situations.
As His followers we need to be like HIM so that the world knows Jesus through us, through our ways, our deeds, our actions and our behavior when we are put in adverse situations. Jesus had only one message during his life on the earth – The message of LOVE. In all situations Love one another and as we love, we begin to serve , care for others, we begin to respect others and we begin to share the good news of our KING.
This Palm Sunday, lets share the message of HIS LOVE.
